South-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria forecast

Weather Situation

A general W to NW wind flow will persist over eastern Gulf waters during the outlook period. A trough will most likely approach far southern Gulf waters from the south early Tuesday.

Southeast Gulf, South of Cape Keer-Weer:

Saturday until midnight: Winds: W to NW 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots at times over northern waters. Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres. Swell: W'ly 1.5 to 2 metres in north, less than 1.5 metres elsewhere. Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.

Sunday: Winds: W to NW 15 to 20 knots, shifting N to NW in the evening. Winds reaching 20 to 25 knots over northern and western waters. Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres. Swell: W to NW 1.5 metres. Isolated showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the far east.

Monday: Winds: N to NW 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots over northern waters in the morning. Winds decreasing NW to NE 10 to 15 knots.

Tuesday: Winds: N to NW 10 to 15 knots reaching 15 to 20 knots over northern waters in the early morning. Winds decreasing late morning to 10 to 15 knots, and shifting S to SE from the south.

Sunday: Winds: W to NW 20 to 25 knots. Decreasing to 15 to 20 knots south of Weipa in the evening. Seas: 2.2 metres, decreasing to 1.7 metres south of Weipa in the evening. Swell: W to NW 1.5 metres. Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.

Monday: Winds: NW 20 to 25 knots, decreasing to 15 to 20 knots south of Weipa during the afternoon.

Peninsula Waters, Torres Strait to Cooktown:

A Strong Wind Warning has been cancelled.

Saturday until midnight: Winds: North of Cape Grenville: W to NW 20 to 25 knots. South of Cape Grenville: W to NW 15 to 25 knots. Seas: 2.2 to 3 metres outside the reef and to 1.7 metres inside the reef. Swell: NW 1.5 metres, increasing to 2 to 3 metres outside the reef south of Cape Grenville. Squally showers and thunderstorms.

Sunday: Winds: North of Cape Grenville: W to NW 20 to 25 knots. South of Cape Grenville: W to NW 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots at times outside the reef during the morning. Saturday until midnight: Winds: W to SW 15 to 25 knots, reaching 25 to 30 knots outside the reef until evening. Seas: 3 metres outside the reef, decreasing to 2.2 metres in the evening, and 1.2 to 1.7 metres inside the reef. Swell: NW 2 to 3 metres outside the reef. Rain areas, squally showers and thunderstorms.

Sunday: Winds: W to SW 10 to 15 knots, reaching 15 to 20 knots at times during the morning. Winds tending NW to NE 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon and evening. The New Caledonia system will move southwestwards into the northern Tasman Sea during the outlook period, extending a S'ly wind flow on to the southern Queensland coast.

Point Danger to Wooli

Synoptic Situation
A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge to New South Wales north coast. During Sunday the ridge will weaken as the high moves south-southeast and a southerly change associated with a cold front crossing the southern Tasman Sea will develop on the south coast in the evening extending to the far north coast later on Monday.

Far North Coastal Waters, Point Danger to Wooli and 60nm seawards:
Saturday: Winds: South to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres.
Sunday: Winds: South to southeasterly 10 to 20 knots becoming southeasterly up to 10 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the morning then decreasing to below 1 metre by early evening. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres.
Monday: Winds: Westerly and light tending northeast to northwesterly up to 10 knots around midday then tending east to southeasterly during the afternoon. Winds tending south to southeasterly up to 10 knots later in the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 2 metres.
Tuesday: Winds: South to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots increasing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. Swell: Easterly about 2 metres.

PART 2 SITUATION At 040600UTC. The monsoon trough extended from 19S146E to a low [989hPa] near 17.3S150.1E to 20S160E to 20S170E. The low is forecast to be near 17.2S152E at 041800UTC and near 17.4S154E at 050600UTC, with the monsoon trough remaining near stationary.
