South-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria forecast

Weather Situation

A high [1025 hPa] over eastern New South Wales, with another high cell moving into the Great Australian Bight on the weekend. These highs will continue to direct E to SE winds over Gulf waters. An upper disturbance expected to tighten the gradient over far northern waters on the weekend.

Southeast Gulf, South of Cape Keer-Weer:

Thursday until midnight: Winds: SE 10 to 15 knots. Seas: 1.2 metres. Swell: Less than 1.5 metres.

Friday: Winds: E to SE 15 to 20 knots, decreasing to 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon. Seas: 1.7 metres, decreasing to 1.2 metres in the afternoon. Swell: Less than 1.5 metres.

Saturday: Winds: E to SE 15 to 20 knots, decreasing to 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon.

Sunday: Winds: E to SE 15 to 20 knots, decreasing to 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon.

North-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria forecast

Weather Situation

A high [1025 hPa] over eastern New South Wales, with another high cell moving into the Great Australian Bight on the weekend. These highs will continue to direct E to SE winds over Gulf waters. An upper disturbance expected to tighten the gradient over far northern waters on the weekend.

Northeast Gulf, North of Cape Keer-Weer:

Thursday until midnight: Winds: E to SE 15 to 20 knots, decreasing to 10 to 15 knots inshore south of Weipa. Seas: 1.2 to 1.7 metres. Swell: Less than 1.5 metres. Isolated showers. Isolated thunderstorms over far northern waters.

Friday: Winds: E to SE 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots north of Weipa. Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres. Swell: Less than 1.5 metres. Isolated showers. Isolated thunderstorms over far northern waters.

Saturday: Winds: E to SE 20 to 25 knots, increasing to 25 to 30 knots in the far north.

Sunday: Winds: E to SE 20 to 25 knots, reaching 25 to 30 knots in the far north during the morning.

Torres Strait to Cooktown forecast

Weather Situation

A slow moving high [1026 hPa] over southern New South Wales extends a firm ridge along the northeast Queensland coast. A trough over the northwest Coral Sea will move west towards Torres Strait during Friday, combining with the ridge to gradually strengthen SE'ly winds over Peninsula waters.

Peninsula Waters, Torres Strait to Cooktown:

A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Friday for waters between Cooktown and Lockhart River, extending northwards to Torres Strait by the early hours of Saturday morning.

Thursday until midnight: Winds: SE 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1.7 metres outside the reef, 1.2 metres inside the reef. Swell: SE 2 metres outside the reef. Isolated showers, tending to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in Torres Strait.

Friday: Winds: SE 20 to 25 knots, increasing to 25 to 30 knots south of Lockhart River in the afternoon. Seas: 2.7 metres outside the reef, 2.2 metres inside the reef Swell: SE 2 to 2.5m metres outside the reef. Isolated showers, tending to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in Torres Strait.

Saturday: Winds: SE 25 to 30 knots.

Sunday: Winds: SE 25 to 30 knots.

Thursday until midnight: Winds: SE 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots at times north of Cairns. Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres outside the reef, 1.2 to 1.7 metres inside the reef. Swell: SE 1.5 to 2 metres outside the reef. Scattered showers.

Friday: Winds: SE 15 to 20 knots, reaching 20 to 25 knots outside reef, increasing throughout to 20 to 25 knots north of Cairns. Seas: 2.2 metres outside the reef, 1.7 metres inside the reef. Swell: SE 2 metres outside the reef. Scattered showers.

A high centred over eastern Victoria extends a ridge across New South Wales, and will remain the dominant feature through the next few days as it drifts slowly east. This will be accompanied by generally light winds along the coast. A weak trough appears likely to affect southern parts late Friday and Saturday.

Thursday: Winds: Southeasterly below 10 knots. Seas: Below 1 metre. Swell: Southerly 1.5 metres. The chance of thunderstorms.
